Translation Procedure

Since the final toolkit should be used in different countries, it is important that we use a consistent and standardized translation procedure. This procedure should also be used whenn translating the Research Tool.

You can also use "log files" in which you can enter the various steps of the translation procedure (Summary Report Logs)

Steps in translation procedure

 Determine persons involved, start with summary report

è Log A

  1. Select 2 forward translators (FTs) from English to [new language]:

-          both native in target language, and second language English

-          1 informed (aware of health concept) and 1 uninformed (naïve to concept) with respect to instrument content

  1. Each FT produces an independent translation of items form English to target language

è LogB_FT1 and LogB_FT2

  1. Combine both translations into one common translation

è Log C

  1. Select 2 Back Translators (BTs):

-          both native in English, and second language target language

-           1 informed (aware of health concept) and 1 uninformed (naïve to concept) with respect to instrument content

  1. Each BT produces an independent translation of items from target language to English

è LogD_BT1 and LogD_BT2

  1. Combine both translations into one common translation. Consult with FT, BT, or both in relation to identified problems.

è Log E

  1. For discrepant items repeat forward translation (and synthesis), back translation, and review until there are no discrepancies.

  1. Complete the summary report of the translation process
